“All people die, but not all people live,” and on August 5th, 2023, the good Lord unexpectedly called home the well-lived life of Evelyn ‘Neb’ McGinnis at the age of 84. While we mourn her loss, we take solace in knowing her spirit has left an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her. She lived a life devoted to her family, and her accomplishments were measured not in world achievements, but in the boundless love and laughter she had to offer.
Evelyn was born June 4th, 1939 on Camp Stewart to Woodrow Wilson and Alice Futch. She lived a life like no other; one characterized by a stubborn spirit she joyfully poured into her family. She lived life on her own terms, of that there can never be any doubt, but she always made a place for kindness. Her home was always a place of warmth and comfort, where family and friends were welcomed with open arms. Evelyn would give you the shirt off her back without a second thought and had an innate ability to make everyone feel like family, even those she’d just met. She never shied away from a hard job or tough situation, doing whatever it took to provide.
However, her true calling was when she became, ‘Nanny.’ For over 30 years she was an endless source of love and abundant spoiling to multiple generations of grandchildren, often slipping them homemade jars of tomatoes with a sly smile. She delighted in spending time with them and had a unique way of making each one feel special, like they were the center of her world.
As a four time cancer survivor, she was a pillar of extraordinary strength and resilience to her family, showing courage in the face of tremendous adversity. Evelyn fought for every precious moment with her loved ones.
Those that have gone on to clear the path for Evelyn are her father, Woodrow; her mother, Alice; her sister, Wilene ; her brothers, W.H. and Eugene ; and her son, Mike. Loved ones that will miss Evelyn until they meet again are her daughters, Alice Smith (Stoney) and Cindy Hester; her grandchildren, Chad Woods (Pamela), JR Gallegos (Lori), Olivia Cooke (James), Becca Gray, and Sarah Rudd (Kris): her brother Dale Futch, and sister, Gail Futch Miness: her beloved niece Annette Mitchell and grand-niece Christine Mitchell, as well as many great-grand children, nieces, nephews, and friends who loved her deeply.
Pallbearers: JR Gallegos, Chad Woods, James Cooke, Joseph Weaver, Stoney Smith and Shane Braly.
Honorary pallbearers: Henry Butler, Jacob Mitchell and Bill Futch.
Funeral services to celebrate her life and honor her memory will be held on August 9th at 12:00 pm at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Flemington. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am. Burial will be in the Hinesville Cemetery.
Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Flemington, is handling the arrangements.
