George Michael O’Brien, 80, known by friends and family as 'Mike’', passed away September 12, 2024 after declining health.
Mike was born on January 28, 1944, in Anderson, Indiana. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1962 and served for twenty years. Mike was a meteorologist who worked on Air Force bases as well as being attached to Army units for fifteen of his twenty years of service. He received a plethora of Air Force and Army awards and citations during his service. He was honorably discharged in 1982.
Mike met the love of his life, Helga, while stationed in Frankfort, Germany after being introduced by an acquaintance. They built a beautiful life together for 57 years that was filled with love, laughter, and adventure through travel. Mike and Helga had two sons, Michael and Jonathan.
Outside of his professional achievements, Mike's greatest passions included hunting, fishing as well as a love for knowledge and reading. On Sunday afternoons, he would often be found watching Nascar races and football. In addition, he was always up for a good debate with anyone.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife, Helga; sons Michael (Cathy) and Jonathan (Teresa); grandson Mackenzie, brother William O'Brien and sister in law Vicky Everett. Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Patricia Everett and brother Bradley Everett.
In lieu of lowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Mikes memory to Liberty Humane Shelter or to the Excelsior Ambulance service.
Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home & Crematory is handling the arrangements.
