Howard Lee Powell

Howard Lee Powell, 78, passed away on January 4, 2021 at Landmark Hospital in Savannah, Georgia.

Howard was born in Abilene, Texas on March 17, 1942 to the late Edward and Thelma (Pigg) Powell.  He graduated from S And S High School, Class of 1960. After graduation he attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas and North Texas State College in Denton, Texas.  Howard worked for Texas Instruments for a while and eventually became a teacher. He then decided to get his nursing degree from Texas Women’s University where he was one of the very first males to attend. From there Howard was in charge of the Health Department in Denton where he was head nurse.
In 1981 Howard joined the United States Army where he entered as a Captain in the Army Nursing Corps. While on active duty in Germany he obtained his Masters Degree. After his military career he went to work for (ACES) Army Continuing Education System in Germany working as a Education Services Specialist. In 1995 Howard transferred to ACES in Hinesville/Ft. Stewart and decided to make Liberty County his home. He retired in March of 2007 from the DOD after working with the United States Government for 34 years. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, and his ex-wife, Lynn Powell.

Howard deeply cared for others and fervently wanted to help and relieve suffering to all, especially those with mental illness and addictions.  He was a Renaissance man, widely traveled, and an independent thinker. To him knowledge was the greatest treasure on earth.

Howard is survived by his domestic partner, James Monroe; daughter, Paula Sutton (Michael Smith); grandsons, Paul Sutton (Lisa), James Sutton, step-grandson, Joshua Sutton and their father, Richard Sutton;  brother, Eddie Powell; niece, Lisa Newtown; dear friend, Charlie Blauvelt and numerous other family members.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the funeral home chapel one hour prior to the service.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Flemington with Chad Chaffee officiating.  Military honors will be rendered during the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia.
