James Ray Merfeld Obituary
US Army Ret. Sgt 1st Class James “Jim” Merfeld, 63, passed away unexpectedly on December 1st at his residence in Hinesville, Georgia. Jim was born October 22, 1961, in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. After retiring from active duty, Jim continued to serve his country as a contractor and civil servant with the 406th Army Field Sustainment Battalion Maintenance section.
Jim enjoyed sitting on the back porch, listening to bad 80’s music and engaging in lively conversations with friends and family. He always wanted everyone to have a good time and will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
He leaves his wife, Ronda, whom he married on July 20th, 1985,at Fort Hood, Texas. Jim will be dearly missed by his mother, Adele, brother, Rick, his sister Becky (Todd) Thoeni from Dubuque, Iowa; Mother-in-law, Laura Colbert, Tallmadge Ohio; Sisters-in-law, Carole (Dale) Bader, Akron, Ohio; Cathy (Edward) Griffith, Newnan, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Lorenz “Larry” Merfeld and his father-in-law, Ronald Colbert.
Services to honor Jim’s life and legacy will be held at Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home
Visitation: Friday, December 6, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington.
Funeral Service: Friday, December 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home.
Committal Service: Friday, December 6, 2024 at 3:00 pm at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia with full military honors being rendered.
