James “Jim” William Putnam, 75, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022 at home, while under the care of hospice with family by his side.
Jim was born July 21, 1946 to the late James B. Putnam and Margaret Newport Putnam in Niagara Falls, New York. Jim grew up and attended schools in New York before enlisting into the United States Army. While serving Jim had many duty stations to include, Ft. Riley, Kansas, Ft. Drum, New York, three tours to Germany and finally the place he made his home, Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Jim did two tours in Vietnam and one to the Persian Gulf.
During his service Jim received many medals and ribbons, including the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Army Commendation Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), the Overseas Service Ribbon (4), the Overseas Service Bar (2), the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, the Army Retired Lapel, the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, the Republic of Gallantry Cross Unit Citation Badge with Palm, the Army Good Conduct Medal and many marksmanship badges. Jim retired in ‘91 after 20 plus years of service.
After retiring Jim spent time doing the things he loved to do which was spending time with his family and watching sports. Jim was an avid bowler and was on several leagues.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy Putnam and his sister, Jane Shomers. Jim will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Jim is survived by son, Mark Putnam, daughter, Dawn Runnels, son, Steven L. Agosta (Tianne), daughter, Nicole L. Agosta, son, Mark A. Agosta, daughter, Allison M. Agosta, son, James M. Putnam; sister, Ruth Schrimmel, brother, John Putnam; 3 grandchildren, Sarah Whited, Nicholas Agosta and Ethan Agosta; 1 great grandson, John Luke Berny and many other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Flemington with Deacon Doug Delzeith officiating. Inurnment will be on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville with military honors being rendered.
