Sergeant First Class (U.S. Army, Retired) Jason J. Barr passed away at his home on May 21, 2026. He was 48 years old.
Born to John Patrick Barr and Mary Beth Ellis on April 6, 1978, Jason grew up in Croswell, Michigan. He completed high school in 1996 and entered the United States Army as an Infantryman (11B) in 1998. After a distinguished career of more than 20 years, he retired in 2019 and ultimately moved to Fort Stewart, Georgia with his wife Misty and their family.
Jason was a firm-but-fair leader who was fiercely loyal to, and protective of his family, his friends, and those in his care. His eyes gleamed when he told jokes and stories about the men and women he served with. He loved the Army, his country, his friends, and his family, and it showed in everything he did.
In his retirement, he pursued his passion for fishing, panning for gold, and spending time with his family. This included cooking for and looking after his youngest children, and trying his best to make the family yard look like Misty’s Hawaiian home. His service, in and out of uniform, was always selfless.
Jason’s Army service included deployments to Kuwait, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and three combat tours in Iraq. His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal (3), Purple Heart (2), Meritorious Service Medal (3), Army Commendation Medal (6), Army Achievement Medal (4), Good Conduct Medal (6), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (4), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and NATO Medal. His unit decorations include the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Presidential Unit Citation, and Valorous Unit Award.
A decorated Combat Infantryman, a dear friend, and a devoted family man, he is survived by his grandfather and fellow Army veteran, Lyle M. Clarkson; his father, John Patrick Barr and his wife Susan; his mother, Mary Beth Ellis and her husband Mark; his wife, Misty Lee (Pacheco) Barr and her brothers, Alex and Rahni Pantorilla; his sister, Jenna Rose Bagwell and her husband David; his daughters, Alyssa Michele Barr and Ellie Anna Barr (29 and 14); his sons, Dominic John Barr (23), Jacob Peter Barr (18), John Lyle Barr (11), and stepson, Christopher Kainoa (20);and his granddaughter, Kendall Irene Barr (2).
