John O. Gill, Sr., 93, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2022 at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a long illness, surrounded by his family.
John was born January 6, 1929 in Ridgeland, South Carolina to the late James C. “J.C.” Gill and Susie Phillips Gill. John grew up and attended school in Liberty County. John married Dorothy Mae Fisher in 1948, and they had three children. John owned and operated many businesses to include Sand Hill Service Station, located on highway 17 in Riceboro. He also raised cattle and was a produce farmer.
When John wasn’t working he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and taking care of his cows. John also loved his blue heeler cattle dog, Blue. He loved spending time with his family especially his grandkids. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy Mae, his son, John Oliver “J.O.” Gill, Jr., his daughter, Eileen Gill Riley, his siblings, 7 brothers and one sister. John will be dearly missed by many friends and especially his family.
John is survived by his daughter, Helen Gill Lane; his granddaughters, Amy Lane, April Riley and Brandi Riley; his sister, Barbara Gill Davis; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers: Irvin Davis, Charlie Phillips, Moe Gill, Freddy Young, Clint Durrence, Robert Phillips, Dr. Keith Cobbs, Dr. Sidney Bolch, Van Martin, Peter Martin, Jerry Martin, Royce Horton, Maurice Stevens and Jerry Davis.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Flemington with Pastors Danny Stillwell and Brenda Crawford officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the services at Mt. Olivet Church Cemetery.
