Krystal Gilbert Obituary

Krystal Kandy Gilbert, age 34, passed away tragically on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Krystal was born on August 14, 1991, in Nashville, Tennessee, to James Joseph Sanderson and Michele Ayers. At an early age, her family moved to South Effingham, Georgia, where Krystal flourished and grew into the remarkable woman so many loved. She excelled academically and graduated as valedictorian of her class at South Effingham High School.

Her dedication to learning and service continued as she attended Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia. She also attended Western Governors University where she graduated with a Master of Science, Nursing- Education (BSN to MSN). Krystal went on to become a nursing professor and later served as a director of a hospice center, devoting her life to caring for others with compassion and skill. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she selflessly completed two tours in New York City, answering the call to serve during one of the nation’s most challenging healthcare crises.

A Georgia girl at heart, Krystal could light up any room with her radiant smile and iconic laugh. She loved music, arts and crafts, and spending time at the beach. Above all else, she cherished time with her family—especially her beloved daughter, Lily Sue, who was the center of her world.

Krystal had a generous heart and an unwavering spirit. She was always there to lend a helping hand or offer encouragement. She loved life deeply and lived it to the fullest, leaving behind countless memories and an enduring legacy of kindness.

She is survived by her daughter, Lily Sue Gilbert; her mother, Michele Reyes (José); her father, James Joseph Sanderson; her brother, James Sanderson II; her grandmothers, Vicki Ayers and Karen Sanderson; her grandfather, Richard Ayers; her ex-husband, Alan Gilbert; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members.

Krystal will be profoundly missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
