Larry Bryan (Col. U.S. Army, Ret.) Obituary

Colonel Larry E. Bryan, USA, Retired, 79, passed away April 14, 2023, peacefully at home in Hinesville, Georgia.  Helen, his loving wife of 57 years, son Travis and daughter Angela were by his side.

Larry was born and raised in the small, citrus farming town of Zolfo Springs, Florida.  After high school, with little money and many loans, but great aspirations and a scholarship, he headed for the University of Florida in Gainesville.  Being studious, while working, drumming in the Gator Marching Band and taking on more loans, he earned his B.S. in Journalism and M.A. in Journalism and Communications, both from the University of Florida.  Go Gators!

In 1967, Larry joined the U.S. Army.  He was deployed to Vietnam in 1968 with the 458th Transportation Company, nine days after his first child, Travis, was born.  His military assignments include Korea, the Middle East, the Pentagon, U.S. Central Command, and serving as Commander of the 118th Support Battalion in Mainz, Germany.  During his 27 years of service, he specialized in Public Affairs and Logistics/Transportation.  His military medals include the following:  Bronze Star, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Defense Meritorious Service, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, National Defense Service, Armed Forces Expeditionary (Korea), and Vietnam Service.

After retiring from the military in 1994, Larry applied his worldly knowledge to become a beloved teacher for Liberty County Schools in Georgia.  His 10-year tenure encompassed teaching Social Studies, Geography and Earth Science to rambunctious middle schoolers.  Alaska, where the family was stationed in the 70’s, then beckoned him to return.  He answered the call, living in both Georgia and Alaska over the past decade.

Larry had a great life and enjoyed photography, hunting, fishing and cooking.  He now lives eternally in our hearts and minds, as he rests in peace at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville.

In lieu of flowers, offerings may be sent in Larry’s memory to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 302 East General Stewart Way, Hinesville, Georgia 31313.
