MSG (Ret.) Julio A. Cruz

MSG (Ret.) Julio A. Cruz, 92, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, July 21, 2024 in Okatie, South Carolina at Sprenger Health Care of Bluffton.

Julio was born October 4, 1931 in Puerto Rico to parents, Neri Cruz and Rosa Velez.  He grew up in Puerto Rico where he attended schools. After Julio graduated he taught bookkeeping for a few years before he decided to enlist in the United States Army. He met the love of his life, Flor E. Martinez in 1957 while in Puerto Rico and they married September 13, 1958. Julio and Flor traveled to many different duty stations around the world with their children before being stationed at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. Julio retired in 1979 and the family made their home in the Liberty County area. Julio was a member of First Baptist Church of Hinesville where he also taught a men’s Sunday School class. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Ilia Santos. Julio will be greatly missed by his family and friends. 

Survivors include Julio’s wife, Flor Cruz of Hinesville; five sons, Julio Cruz, II of Florida, Xavier Cruz of Hinesville, Steven Cruz of Tennessee, Jose’ Cruz (Wanda) of Atlanta and Ronald Cruz of South Carolina; two daughters, Sol Satterfield (John) of Midway and Lisa Cruz (Tom Jones) of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Katie Cruz, Ashley Cruz both of Atlanta and John David Satterfield of Midway; 1 great grandchild, Ezra of Atlanta; sisters, Neida Santos and Magda Santos both of Puerto Rico; nephews and many extended family members and dear friends.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home in Flemington. 

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at 11:00 am at Hinesville First Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Broughman officiating. Burial will follow at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 pm with full military honors being rendered.
