Martha Jannette Shearouse Alexuk, 75, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, February 1, 2026, while under the compassionate care of hospice.
Jan was born May 29, 1950, in Orlando, Florida, to the late Ray Shearouse, a meteorologist, and Amelia Shearouse, a devoted homemaker. A proud military spouse and service member herself, Jan’s life was shaped by faith, education, service, and love for people. She was a participant of the Senior Olympics and attended the United Methodist Church in Hinesville.
She was a veteran of the United States Army where she excelled and received the Good Conduct Medal and Marksman with a Rifle. In 1988, she made Hinesville, Georgia her home after returning from Germany with her husband, Nicholas Alexuk. Jan and Nicholas shared 48 beautiful years of marriage, having wed while both were serving in the military and stationed at West Point. He was truly the love of her life.
Jan earned her master’s degree from New Orleans Baptist University and went on to become a respected professor of theology. She taught religion courses at the college level, serving both active-duty military members and retirees through the education center. Her students adored her for her kindness, encouragement, and genuine care for others. Teaching was more than a career—it was a calling.
A true people person, Jan was known for her positive attitude and her habit of always looking out for others. Though she wouldn’t admit it, she deeply enjoyed the adventures and experiences that came with Army life and travel. She loved life and lived it to its fullest.
At heart, Jan was a Southern girl. She loved football—especially LSU football—softball (which she played while serving in the Army), and baseball. She delighted in simple joys like a glass of orange juice and cherished life and the people in it with her whole heart.
Jan will be remembered for her faith, her warmth, her dedication to education, and the love she poured into everyone she met. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched as a wife, educator, friend, and mentor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Amelia Shearouse.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 48 years, Nicholas Alexuk, along with a community of family, friends, students, and colleagues who will forever treasure her memory.
An inurnment of Jan’s cremains will be held Friday, February 6, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, Georgia where military honors will be rendered.
Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home & Crematory is handling the arrangements.
