Maryann Smith Obituary

Maryann Smith, 57, of Isle of Wight, GA, went to join her daddy in heaven June 10 after a yearlong battle with cancer.

Maryann was born in Savannah, GA, June 22, 1966, and
lived in Liberty County thereafter. She developed a love of Liberty County that persevered throughout her life. Nothing pleased her more than to cruise along the salt water in her boat or to sit on her dock and watch the dolphins swim by. She had a strong interest in the history of Liberty County and its roots in Coastal Georgia. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Colonists.

Her other favorite pastime was playing cards with her friends Lori, Lisa, and Jamie. In 2016 she met Joel Aaron, her soulmate and the love of her life. They shared a love of music and attended over 50 concerts together. She had a love for travel, taking many trips to Costa Rica with her friend Jennifer as well as trips to Europe with her mother and niece, and extensive travel in the U.S. with Joel. She maintained a lifelong connection to her extended family and loved to hang out with Kelly and her other cousins.

Maryann had a zest for life and her outgoing personality attracted a host of friends. She worked tirelessly to promote the welfare of abandoned and abused animals, volunteering for 14 years with Carpathia PAWS Animal Rescue as well as serving on the board of directors as vice president for 10 years. A few years ago, she challenged certain county policies regarding animal services and was a driving force in improvements to the management of stray animals in Liberty County. In addition to her volunteer service, she fostered more than 200 cats and kittens until they could be placed in permanent homes.

Maryann attended Liberty County public schools, graduating from Bradwell Institute in 1984. She received her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Georgia Southern University in 1989. She was owner of VIP Promotional Products, Inc. in Hinesville.

Raised in the Methodist denomination, Maryann had an abiding faith in God and found joy in knowing that she was going to take her rest in Heaven.

Maryann was preceded in death by her father, William N. Smith, who passed away in January of this year. She is survived by her mother, Donnie Smith, of Flemington, GA; her brother, David N. Smith, and his wife, Lisa, and their children Cameron and Ansley Smith, of Dunwoody, GA, her uncle, Franklin Dunham (Elaine) of Ludowici, GA; her partner and the love of her life, Joel Aaron, of Columbia, SC and his children, Jake (Brenis) and Sam (Lindsay), as well as many extended family members and close friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at 11:00 am at Midway Methodist Church, 215 Martin Road, Midway, GA with Rev. Hank Perry officiating. Maryann’s family will receive friends in the church social hall after the service.

Given Maryann’s passion for animal welfare, in lieu of flowers her family requests donations to Carpathia PAWS Animal Rescue, via PayPal at carpathiapaws@gmail.com or by check to 1534 Airport Road, Hinesville, GA 31313.
