Mr. Paul Bensel passed away January 28th, 2023 at the age of 94.7 knowing that he was important to his long term friends and care-takers, Pat Rentz, Philemon Jackson, and her family.
Paul was able to live independently at home until January 9th with their help, and with good neighbors watching out for him. He was born June 1, 1928 to Alice Jackson Bensel and Rudolph Bensel into a large, loving family in Spokane, Washington. At age three, his family went to a TB Sanatorium to heal. Paul went to live with relatives in California until he joined the U.S. Air Force for ten years. When stationed in Savannah, GA he met and married Melba Dixon, had two children, and stayed in Savannah the rest of his days.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, ex-wife, Melba (he regretted the divorce), Daughter, Julie (21), Son, Paul Jr (72), Brothers, Franklin, Rudolph, Herbert, Charles, and Sisters, Nyra, Louise, and Marian. He leaves behind nieces and nephews but did not have the pleasure of meeting most of them.
Before Paul's health declined; he continued to work, was an avid golfer, dancer, exercised religiously, and loved to take trips. After his health declined, he indulged in watching golf, football games, the occasional old movie, and yelling at the TV. His joy was placing bets on sport events, having a good Martini, and an even better cigar! He also loved to debate politics, and current news.
During Paul’s recent stay on 3-N in Memorial Medical, he expressed appreciation for the team of people who took great care of his needs while telling them they asked too many questions, and fussed because they had to awaken him to check his vitals! They treated him with compassion and dignity while encouraging him to focus on getting stronger.
He requested that his body be cremated, and ashes scattered. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
Paul requested upon his death that any remembrances be made to the American Heart Association.
Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Flemington, is handling arrangements.
