Paul Popour Obituary

Paul Dominic Popour, 66, of Sunbury, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on September 5, 2024.

Paul was born in Manistique, Michigan.  The Popour family moved from Michigan to Hinesville, Georgia in 1966.  He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1976, where he served aboard the Aircraft Carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower.  Paul was awarded Attack Squadron Sixty-Six Sailor of the Month for February 1980.  This award was based on his “professionalism, enthusiasm, and dedication to duty”.  After four years of honorable service in the Navy, Paul transitioned to a career in Information Technologies, which led him to a fulfilling 20-year tenure at Gulfstream Aerospace, from which he retired.  Paul also taught MIcrosoft Certification courses at Armstrong State University.

On February 19, 1977, Paul married the love of his life, Donna Buck. Together, they built a beautiful life in Fleming, Georgia, filled with love, laughter, and adventure.  In 2002 Paul and Donna moved to the coastal town of Sunbury, Georgia, where they embraced the seaside lifestyle.

Outside of his professional achievements, Paul’s greatest passion was offshore fishing. He particularly sought the thrill of fishing for kingfish, spending hours on the water immersed in the sport he loved.

Paul was known as a "jack of all trades." He possessed a remarkable talent for carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, auto repair, and cooking.  He especially loved preparing Double Chocolate Chip Cookies for the congregation of Midway Methodist Church, of which he was a member.

Paul is survived by his devoted wife, Donna Popour; mother Vera Popour; sisters Geraldine (Ed) Going, Linda Smith, and Teresa Biron;  sister in law Sandra Beasley; his two children, Nic (Diamond) Popour  and Nicole (Marty) Martin; and his five cherished grandchildren: Adam (Bailey) Popour, Anthony (Samaya) Popour, Maggie Horton, Jamie Martin, and Lanie Mae Martin. He also leaves behind three beloved great-grandchildren: Colton Popour, Michael Popour, and Samuel Popour.

Paul is preceded in death by his father Gerald Popour, and his brother Jerome Popour.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Paul’s memory to MIdway Methodist Church (Midwaymethodist.net), the Paralyzed Veterans of America (Pva.org), Hospice of South Georgia (hospicesoga.org) or your local veterans shelter.

A visitation will be held at 11am Saturday, September 14 at Midway Methodist Church.  The memorial service will follow at 12pm. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Naval Honor Guard.

Paul’s life was a testament to love, service, and skill. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home & Crematory is handling the arrangements.
