It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, better known as Opa, Reginald Grant Sage, SFC Retired.
Reggie passed away peacefully at home on November 30th, 2022 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Brattleboro, Vermont on January 18, 1945, (a birthdate he shared with his first grandchild Katrina) to Wallace and Thelma Sage, he was the 4th of 6 children.
A true American hero to his family, he joined the United States Army on January 18, 1962 at the young age of 17. Reggie served his country with pride from many different locations of the world to include Korea, Thailand, Germany and the U.S. Reggie met and then married the love of his life, Heide on March 19, 1965 in Kornwestheim, Germany. Reggie and Heidi had two children , Timothy and Angela and always created a loving home wherever the military led him. His most favorite duty station was when he was stationed at Christensen Barracks, better known as “The Rock” in the quaint town of Bindlach, Germany. During this time, he decided to create his home in the small farm town of Wasserknoden. Reggie grew to love the town and before long had become the friend of many. Having been raised on a farm himself, here is where he introduced his kids to a world of creating memories that would last them a lifetime. Reggie’s final stationing was Fort Stewart which became his final home.
Retiring from the military on January 31, 1981 allowed him to continue his service to this country in different ways as he was a firm believer of John F. Kennedy’s historic words, “ Ask not what your country can do for you - but what you can do for your country.” He instilled this belief in his children, grandchildren and great grands. Not one to sit idle or one to rely on others, Reggie created R & H Landscaping, and partnered in Hinesville Saw Shop. Reggie served his community in several roles from joining Sertoma ,serving as president, supporting the local Vietnam Veterans Organizations, donating his time at St. Stephens Catholic Church, assisting with the creation of the Meditation Garden at St. Stephens Catholic Church, and being the grill master for many events. His most esteemed position with his dedicated and unwavering support of the Mary Lou Frasier Foundation For Families and YMCA. From the landscaping, grounds maintenance, soccer fields and upkeep of the property, he gave his all to ensure that it always looked its best. The beauty of the YMCA grounds, like his own his family, were his pride and joy. He was honored in 2018 by the Mary Lou Frasier Foundation with a children’s park bearing his namesake. The Reginald G. Sage Children’s park was a tribute to his hard work and dedication to the community.
In his spare time, Reggie enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid hunter. He loved time in the woods, camping, and finding peace in the splendor of nature. He spent many hours preparing for the upcoming hunting seasons, camping, cooking and hunting with his brothers and friends. Reggie would share memories and stories of his many hunting trips by sending a “natural bark” postcard he collected while hunting. He loved the beauty of nature and shared it with others throughout his life. This included his love of gardening and landscaping. He took great pride in his horticulture and landscape and shared with his family through teaching and a bumper crop of citrus fruits.
Reggie is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years Adelheid “Heidi” Sage; sister, Barbara Sparks, brothers Randy Sage (Betty) and Gary Sage (Somjit); children, Timothy F. Sage (Anna) and Angela Kinzer (Shawn); grandchildren, Katrina Barrow, Justin Eaton (Johnna), Adam Sage, Aaron Sage, and Lukas Kinzer; great grandchildren, Khloe Moore, Elin Eaton, Lanie Barrow, Ellis Eaton; nieces, nephews and cousins.
