Shelby Jean Kirkendall, 81, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2023 after a short illness. 

Shelby was born June 6, 1942 in Shelby, North Carolina to the late, Henry and Flossie Woods. She grew up in Shelby where she also attended schools there. She met and married the love of her life, Billy Ray Kirkendall, Sr., who was enlisted in the United States Army. Together with their two small children they traveled to many different locations across the world. Shelby was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 30 years. In 1978 the family moved to the Liberty County area where Ray decided to retire and make their home here. Shelby worked for Coastal Utilities for many years until she decided to retire and devote her time to volunteering for the Red Cross. Shelby was of the Christian Faith and she loved the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Ray. She will be greatly missed by her family and close friends.

Shelby is survived by her daughter, Janet Holbrook (Chris) of Winder, Georgia; son, Billy R. Kirkendall, Jr. (Connie) of Hinesville; 5 grandchildren, Jeremy Ray, Jennifer Ray, Jonathon E. Kirkendall (Chris), Brandon Matthew Kirkendall (Destini) and Morgan Elise Williams; 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Priscilla Gantt (Bill) and Phyllis Mosteller (Gene).

Services will be private. 

Thomas L. Carter Funeral Home, Flemington, is handling the arrangements.
