Sherman Hays Obituary

Sherman Wayne Hays, 82, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026. A devoted husband, father, and decorated veteran, Sherman lived a life defined by service, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

Born on June 30, 1943, to Wayne Dee Hays and Anne Crocker, Sherman grew up with a strong sense of duty that would guide his entire life. In November 1961, he answered the call to serve, beginning a distinguished career in the United States Army that spanned over 20 years. He retired in January 1982 as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 (CW2), leaving behind a legacy of professional excellence and military pride.

Shortly after beginning his military journey, Sherman married the love of his life, Sharon Kay Wood, on December 22, 1963. Their 62-year marriage was a testament to enduring partnership and devotion, weathering the challenges of military life and building a foundation for their four children.

Sherman is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; his children, Angela Lee (Brian), Brenda Lee Fillingame (Allen), Carmen Edwards (Kerry), and Sherman Neil Hays; and his brothers, David, Carl, and Kevin Hays. He was preceded in death by his brother Wayne Dee Hays Jr., his sister, Wilma Higgins, and his parents.

His legacy continues through his many grandchildren: Kyler and Tristin Lee; Reuben and Brandi Wells; Blake and Grant Wolfe; and Trent, Clayton, Caitlyn, and Sharon Hays. He was also the proud great-grandfather to Elliott and Bennett Wright; Everett Lee; Abby, Aliya, Luca, Logan, and Peyton Wells; Owen Wolfe and Oliver Coleman; and Jameson Curl.  He was also the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews

A man of quiet strength and profound impact, Sherman’s influence will be felt for generations. He will be remembered for his 20-plus years of service to his country and his 62 years of steadfast love for his family.
