William Richard Mason Sr. (Sam)
William R. Mason 76, of Allenhurst passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 14, 2021, with his bride of 51 years, Marcia, by his side.
Sam was born in Farmersville, New York to the late Lloyd L. Mason and Mary Ann Mason on April 7, 1944. He grew up with thirteen siblings. Sam joined the United States Army when he was eighteen years old. He married his soulmate, Marcia Ellis of New York on April 12, 1969 in Hume, New York. They started a family, traveled and had many duty stations. Sam served in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He served twenty-two years in the Army and retired as a Master Sargent while stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. After Sam retired he enjoyed his jeep, recliner, westerns, NASCAR races and Judge Judy, but not so much the honey do list Marcia made for him.
Sam loved to piddle in his shed and build things on his own time. He even took a few cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean Islands. Sam was an avid hunter and enjoyed his hunting trips to Cumberland Island. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed being Santa at Christmas while passing out all the gifts. Sam was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Mason of Allenhurst; sons, William (Little Sam) Mason Jr. (Marcia) of Guyton , Dale Mason (April) of Darien, Ga., Charles Mason (Amy) of Fleming and David Mason of Midway Ga.; he was Papa to ten grandchildren; Rebecca, Violetta (Derric), Susan (Quinton), Robert, Scott (Melissa), Clay, Shea-Ann, Noel, Abbie and Noah and two great granddaughters, Maria and Lilly.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Thomas L Carter Funeral Home, 1822 East Oglethorpe Hwy, Flemington, Georgia 31313. Military honors will be rendered at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations can be made in Sam’s name to Tunnel to Towers, Saint Jude‘s hospital, or to GHC (Georgia Hospice Care) of Jesup Georgia.
